Christmas came early for Russellville skateboarders this year as California Skateparks put the final touches on the City of Russellville’s Skateboard Park at the end of November. The park, located just east of USA Drug and Kroger on West Main Street, has been built on the site of property donated to the city of Russellville in 1926 by William E. and Katharine Harmon of New York.
Because of the efforts of so many, Christmas break will be filled with the sound of swishing boards and the overwhelming gratitude of skateboarders and parents alike.

A construction team from California Skateparks began work in late September. The crew that came to Russellville is some of the best in the businesses. Besides building parks all over the United States, this group was also involved with the construction of Tony Hawk’s personal skateboard park in his backyard. California Skateparks has constructed parks as large as 70,000 square feet and as small as 2,500 square feet in 28 of the 50 United States.
A grant of $25,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation, along with a grant of $70,000 from the State of Arkansas, went a long way in the culmination of this park.
Russellville’s park is a tremendous accomplishment that could not have been achieved without the support of the community including: Pope County Community Foundation, Junior Auxiliary of Russellville, Youth Advisory Council, Advertising and Promotion Commission, Arkansas State Troopers Association, AMVETS, First Assembly of God Russellville, First Freewill Baptist Russellville, and Interact.

Individuals throughout the community made donations as well, ranging from small change to amounts over $2,000. Every contribution worked together to make a difference for Russellville’s children and youth.
A special note of thanks goes to the Harmon Foundation. Harmon Park, where the skateboard park is located, was a donation to the City of Russellville in 1926 by William E. Harmon of New York. Foundation awarded a $2,000 grant toward the construction of the skateboard park. “This will be the nicest skatepark in Arkansas and maybe even in the whole southeastern United States,” said Russellville Recreation and Parks Director Mack Hollis.
